Police
in Lapeer, Mich., said a 6-year-old boy told officers he was going to
pick up Chinese food when they pulled him over as he drove his parents'
vehicle.
Several other drivers alerted police to the child driver Saturday morning, The Detroit News reported.
"They told police when they called that it looked like a 6-year-old
was driving the car," said Sgt. Andy Engster of the Lapeer County
Sheriff's Department. "And they were exactly right."
When officers arrived at the scene, two drivers of other vehicles had
boxed in the boy and one driver had reached into the vehicle the boy
was driving and taken the keys out of the ignition, Engster said.
The boy, whose name was not reported, told officers that he took the
keys off the counter at his home and that he was going to get Chinese
food.
He said he had never driven before.
During his joyride, the boy hit a "no left turn" sign and damaged the car.
Police called the boy's father, who came to pick him up.
"He said he was asleep and he didn't even know [his son] was gone," said Engster.
No one was injured during the incident.
